Happy National Adoption Month
A Real-Life Fairy Tale for National Adoption Month
Most of you know that I usually create little fairy tales to go along with each of my diaper cakes. I love dreaming up magical worlds, enchanted forests, and whimsical characters - but sometimes real life writes a better fairy tale than anything I could ever imagine.
And this month, in honor of National Adoption Month, I wanted to share one of those real-life stories that feels more magical than anything I could put into words.
Recently, my dear friend - one of the most beautiful souls I know - ordered a Hulk Hogan–themed diaper cake. At first, it seemed like a fun, nostalgic idea (and trust me, it was!). But the reason behind it is what makes this story so special.
She wasn’t just buying it for a baby shower. She wanted to give it to the biological aunt and uncle of one of her adopted daughters. Why? Because she wanted to help create a moment - a memory - a bridge of love that honors where her daughter came from. This is who my friend is. This is what she does.
Being a foster kid herself, she sees the world through a lens of compassion most people never experience. She and her husband (along with the support of their biological daughter - whose soul is as beautiful as her mother’s) have adopted five little girls, each with her own history, her own wounds, and her own storyline. They made the tremendous, selfless decision to close their home to future placements, not because they do not have enough love to give, but because they were entrusted with something sacred:
Five forever daughters. Five new beginnings. Five fairy tales still being written.
Their home is now a place of healing, of rebuilding, of becoming. Each of these girls arrived with a past shaped by uncertainty, hurt, and loss - yet now they are growing in a home filled with stability, joy, and unconditional love. My friends get to guide them, nurture them, and show them that they can grow into the strongest, happiest, most empowered versions of themselves.
And in moments like this - like choosing to honor biological family with a silly Hulk Hogan diaper cake - it becomes so clear that fairy tales are not always about castles or crowns. Sometimes they are about women and men who choose love again and again, even when it is hard. Sometimes they are about children finally finding their safe place in the world. Sometimes they are about a real-life hero disguised as a mom in leggings, running on coffee, hope, and heart.
Right now in the United States:
Over 390,000 children are currently in the foster care system.
More than 114,000 of them are waiting to be adopted - waiting for their own forever family, their own place to belong, their own fairy tale ending.
Many will spend years moving from home to home, never knowing what stability feels like until someone steps forward and says, “You are mine. Forever.”
This is why National Adoption Month matters. This is why stories like my friend’s deserves to be told.
Her family proves that fairy tales are not just found in storybooks - they happen in living rooms, courtrooms, and kitchens filled with giggles and healing.
So, while I normally write imaginary tales to pair with my cakes, this time I want to honor my friends who have created a real-life fairy tale for these five amazing girls. One I am grateful to witness. And one worth celebrating.
Happy National Adoption Month
